For best results, place the sensor near the sprinkler piping in the coldest likely areas, such as riser rooms, exterior stairwells, loading docks, attics, or unheated perimeter spaces. Avoid placing it near heaters or warm air vents, and mount it where it can detect cold drafts before pipes reach freezing temperatures.

Securing your Temp Stick Pipe Temperature Strap
Stairwells with exterior access

Exterior stairwells, vestibules, and entry areas

These are high-risk because exterior doors can be propped open or fail to latch. If sprinkler branch lines, standpipes, or drains run through a stairwell, this is one of the first places I would monitor.

Sprinkler Riser Rooms

Mechanical rooms, riser rooms, and fire pump rooms

Monitor near sprinkler risers, backflow preventers, fire pump piping, or drain piping, especially in rooms with exterior walls, louvers, vents, roll-up doors, or poor heat. A freeze here can impact much of the system.

Loading Docks and Attic Spaces

Attics, ceiling voids and loading docks

Any sprinkler pipe above ceilings, near rooflines, over loading docks, in canopies, or along exterior walls is vulnerable. Loading docks are especially risky because overhead doors may stay open for long periods.
